About Michael

Michael Grant Bertram is an Associate Professor in the Department of Wildlife, Fish and Environmental Studies at the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences, where he works within the Aquatic Ecology Research Group. He is a behavioural ecologist and ecotoxicologist whose research examines the impacts of human-induced environmental change on ecological and evolutionary processes in wildlife, with a particular focus on how exposure to emerging forms of chemical pollution disrupts complex traits and behavioural processes in wild animals. He employs a combination of laboratory and field approaches to investigate contaminant effects across multiple levels of biological organisation, from individuals to populations and communities, and increasingly emphasises upscaling environmental realism in behavioural ecotoxicology through methods such as field exposures, multiple stressors, and high-resolution acoustic telemetry.

Bertram also holds positions as Guest Researcher in the Department of Zoology at Stockholm University and Adjunct Research Associate in the School of Biological Sciences at Monash University. He serves as Associate Editor for Proceedings of the Royal Society B: Biological Sciences and Environmental Science & Technology, and as a board member of the International Panel on Chemical Pollution and the Society for Open, Reliable, and Transparent Ecology and Evolutionary Biology. He led the development of the EthoCRED evaluation method. In 2024, he was named the Rising Star in Environmental Research.
