About Michael

Dr. Michael Geist is a Full Professor in the Common Law Section of the Faculty of Law at the University of Ottawa, where he holds the Canada Research Chair in Internet and E-commerce Law. He joined the Faculty of Law at the University of Ottawa in 1998 and was promoted to full professor in 2012. He is also a faculty member at the Centre for Law, Technology and Society. Dr. Geist holds an LL.B. from Osgoode Hall Law School, LL.M. degrees from Cambridge University and Columbia Law School, and a J.S.D. from Columbia Law School.

His research and academic interests focus on internet and e-commerce law, privacy, digital copyright, and telecommunications. Dr. Geist has edited several books on copyright law, including The Copyright Pentalogy: How the Supreme Court of Canada Shook the Foundations of Canadian Copyright Law (2013, University of Ottawa Press), From “Radical Extremism” to “Balanced Copyright”: Canadian Copyright and the Digital Agenda (2010, Irwin Law), and In the Public Interest: The Future of Canadian Copyright Law (2005, Irwin Law). He serves on boards including Internet Archive Canada and the EFF Advisory Board. He was appointed to the Order of Ontario in 2018. Additional honors include the Canadian Journalists for Freedom of Expression Vox Libera Award in 2018, the Kroeger Award for Policy Leadership and the Public Knowledge IP3 Award in 2010, the Les Fowlie Award for Intellectual Freedom from the Ontario Library Association in 2009, the EFF’s Pioneer Award in 2008, and Canarie’s IWAY Public Leadership Award. He has been named one of the 25 most influential lawyers in Canada by Canadian Lawyer magazine in 2011, 2012, and 2013, and one of the 50 most influential people in intellectual property globally by Managing Intellectual Property in 2010. Dr. Geist is the creator of the Law Bytes podcast and maintains a blog on internet and intellectual property law issues.
