About Michael

Dr Michael Glinka is a Research Fellow at Edinburgh Pathology within the Cancer Research UK Scotland Centre and the Institute of Genetics and Cancer at The University of Edinburgh. He holds a PhD from the University of Southampton, awarded following research conducted under the supervision of Professor Richard Oreffo at the University of Southampton and Professor Mark Bradley at the University of Edinburgh. His doctoral work, completed around 2020, focused on harnessing natural and synthetic 3D smart materials for targeted stem cell fate and function in skeletal repair.

Dr Glinka’s current research centres on immunohistochemical and single-cell RNA-sequencing analysis of ileocolonic tissue from healthy individuals and patients with Crohn’s disease, with a particular emphasis on the cellular mechanisms underlying fibrotic stenosing lesions. This work forms part of projects supported by the Helmsley Charitable Trust and contributes to the Human Cell Atlas and Gut Cell Atlas initiatives. He collaborates with colleagues including Dr Shahida Din, Professor Mark Arends, and others in pathology and related fields. Recent publications include co-authored work on Crohn’s lymphoid aggregates with endothelial clusters and their colocalisation with submucosal fibrosis in fibrostenosing Crohn’s disease, as well as contributions to studies on the comparative pathology workbench. Dr Glinka joined the University of Edinburgh as a postdoctoral researcher in 2020.
