About Michael

Michael Ostling is a Teaching Professor and Honors Faculty Fellow in Barrett, The Honors College at Arizona State University. He also serves as Faculty Affiliate in the School of Historical, Philosophical and Religious Studies and as Affiliate with the Melikian Center. Ostling earned a Bachelor of Arts in Religious Studies from Reed College in 1998, a Master of Arts in Religious Studies from the University of Toronto in 2000, and a Doctor of Philosophy in Religious Studies from the University of Toronto in 2008. His expertise areas include Anthropology of Religion, History of Early Modern Europe, History of Gender, History of Witchcraft, Magic and Superstition, Pedagogical Studies, Polish Studies, and Religious Studies.

Ostling is a religious studies scholar focusing on the history, historiography, and representation of witches and witchcraft. He is the author of the book Between the Devil and the Host: Imagining Witchcraft in Early Modern Poland, published by Oxford University Press in 2011. He has also published the article Witchcraft in Poland: milk and malefice in 2013. Ostling teaches interdisciplinary humanities in the Honors College at Arizona State University, where he practices a radical pedagogical approach.
