Michael Treschow is an Associate Professor and Head of the Department of English and Cultural Studies in the Faculty of Creative and Critical Studies at the University of British Columbia Okanagan. He joined UBC Okanagan in 2005. Treschow holds a PhD in Old English Philology from the University of Toronto (1991), an MSL in Medieval Studies from the Pontifical Institute of Mediaeval Studies at the University of Toronto (1989), an MA in Medieval Studies from the University of Toronto (1981), and a BA in History and Classics from the University of Calgary (1979).
His research focuses on Old English language and literature, paleography and the digital editing of texts, mystical theology and suffering, and the works of J.R.R. Tolkien. Key projects include a critical and digital edition of the Old English Soliloquies and a translation of John Scotus Eriugena’s Commentary on the Gospel of John. Selected publications include “Æthelred’s Death and the Anglo-Saxon Chronicle’s Tone” in Anglo-Danish Empire: A Companion to the Reign of King Cnut the Great (2022), “Godes Word for Vox Domini in Psalm 28 of the Paris Psalter” in Florilegium (2014), and “Wisdom’s Land: King Alfred’s Imagery in His Preface to His Translation of Augustine’s Soliloquies” in Divine Creation in Ancient, Medieval, and Early Modern Thought (2007). He has also co-authored stylometric analyses of King Alfred’s literary works. Treschow teaches courses including Old English Language and Literature, Chaucer, Middle English Mystical Writings, and Latin. His professional email is listed on official university profiles.
