Dr. Miles Turnbull serves as Dean of the Faculty of Education at the University of Prince Edward Island, a role he assumed on July 1, 2023, for a five-year term. He previously held the position of Dean and Interim Dean of Education at UPEI from 2011 to 2013 and later served as Vice-Principal, Academic and Research at Bishop’s University. Dr. Turnbull joined the UPEI faculty in 2002, where he coordinated the Bachelor of Education program in français langue seconde from 2002 to 2010 and led graduate studies initiatives, including the establishment of the PhD in Educational Studies. His academic credentials include a BA with a major in French from UPEI, an MA in Études françaises focused on teaching French as a second language from McMaster University, and a PhD in Second Language Education from the University of Toronto in 1998.
Dr. Turnbull’s research centers on French as a second language teacher preparation, decisions regarding language use in instruction, code switching, teacher development and beliefs, and the experiences of minority Francophone populations. He has contributed to studies on first language use in French immersion programs and project-based experiential learning. Among his honors are the Prix Robert Roy national award from the Canadian Association of Second Language Teachers in 2012 for outstanding contributions to second language education and recognition as Canadian Parents for French Educator of the Year for Prince Edward Island in 2013. He is a past president of the Canadian Association of Second Language Teachers and has advanced equity, diversity, and inclusion efforts, including work on gender and sexual diversity in classrooms and support for Indigenous initiatives.
