About Mirza Faisal

Mirza Faisal Beg is a Professor in the School of Engineering Science at Simon Fraser University, where he also serves as Graduate Program Chair. He is Co-Director of the Medical Image Analysis Laboratory. Beg earned a B.Tech. (Hons.) from the Indian Institute of Technology, Kharagpur, an M.S. in Biomedical Engineering from Boston University, and a Ph.D. in Biomedical Engineering from The Johns Hopkins University. He is a Michael Smith Foundation for Health Research Scholar. His research interests include methods in computational anatomy, algorithms for segmentation and non-rigid registration of medical images, statistical shape analysis of anatomical shapes and time series of functional and structural images, and computational anatomy applications in the diagnosis of brain and eye diseases and cancer CT imaging, as well as machine learning and deep learning applications in medical imaging. Beg has received the APEGBC Meritorious Achievement Award in 2012 and recognition for excellence in teaching from the Faculty of Applied Sciences at Simon Fraser University. He maintains an active role in organizing workshops, such as the Workshop on Mathematics of Brain Imaging at SFU, and contributes to collaborative research efforts in ophthalmic imaging and related fields.
