About Moataz

Dr. Moataz Mohamed is an Associate Professor in the Department of Civil Engineering at McMaster University, where he also serves as Director of the McMaster Institute for Transportation and Logistics (MITL) and holds the Joseph Ip Distinguished Engineering Fellowship. He graduated from the Faculty of Engineering at Assiut University in Egypt in 2004. He received his Master’s degree from the University of Rome, La Sapienza, in 2007 and his Ph.D. from the University of Ulster in the United Kingdom in 2012. Dr. Mohamed joined the McMaster community in 2014 as a Postdoctoral Fellow at MITL and was appointed to the faculty in the Department of Civil Engineering on July 1, 2017.

Dr. Mohamed’s research focuses on the systemic evaluation of transportation networks to achieve sustainable and resilient transportation systems, with particular emphasis on zero-emission, sustainable, and resilient transit systems that support smart cities. His work examines the utilization of disruptive technologies in transit networks, including electric and autonomous technologies, with attention to operational reliability, environmental assessment, total cost of ownership, and the systemic impacts of transit systems on the utility grid and energy demand. He also investigates the use of UAVs in last-mile parcel delivery, including swarm communication, way-finding optimization, energy consumption, environmental assessment, and user acceptance. Dr. Mohamed has been honoured with multiple prestigious academic awards for his research contributions, including the Runner-Up Smeed Prize at the 44th Universities’ Transport Study Group Conference, Best Paper Awards at the 3rd Irish Transport Research Network Conference and the 13th World Conference on Transport Research, the Best Paper Award at the IEEE Transportation Electrification Conference and Expo, the Ron Rice Award for the Best Conference Paper at the 2021 Canadian Transportation Research Forum Annual Conference, and the Best Theoretical Oriented Paper award from the Journal of Hazardous, Toxic and Radioactive Waste.
