About Nathaniel

Dr Nathaniel Mon Père is a Postdoctoral Researcher at the Barts Cancer Institute, Queen Mary University of London, where he has held the position since December 2020. He is affiliated with the Centre for Genomics and Computational Biology and works under the supervision of Dr Benjamin Werner. His research investigates the mathematical properties of somatic evolution in both cancerous and healthy tissue, with a focus on the mathematical study of genetic heterogeneity in human tissues. This work aims to better understand and quantify cell behaviours in complex tissue architectures and to improve understanding of oncogenesis and early tumour development. He employs methods from population genetics, dynamical systems, stochastic processes, and numerical analysis, with particular emphasis on the construction and solution of stochastic differential equation and stochastic partial differential equation systems.

Dr Mon Père obtained his Doctor of Sciences degree from the Vrije Universiteit Brussel on 27 November 2020, with a doctoral thesis on statistical biophysics of hematopoiesis and growing cell populations. Prior to his current role, he contributed to research on evolutionary dynamics, including a 2018 publication on the evolutionary dynamics of paroxysmal nocturnal hemoglobinuria. His recent publications include a 2024 paper in eLife on measures of genetic diversification in somatic tissues at bulk and single-cell resolution, a 2022 paper in Physical Review E on Brownian motion in a growing population of ballistic particles, a 2021 paper in iScience on multistage feedback-driven compartmental dynamics of hematopoiesis, and 2026 work on the evolution of polyclonal competition in aging tissues. He maintains a verified academic profile on Google Scholar and an ORCID record.
