About Neil

Professor Neil Quigley serves as Vice-Chancellor and President of the University of Waikato, a position he has held since early 2015. He previously held the role of Professor of Economics at Victoria University of Wellington and at the University of Western Ontario in Canada, where he taught and published in the field of economics. Professor Quigley earned a BA and an MA from the University of Canterbury and a PhD from the University of Toronto. He has also received an honorary PhD from the University of Economics Ho Chi Minh City. In governance roles, Professor Quigley was appointed Chair of the Board of Directors of the Reserve Bank of New Zealand in 2016, with his term extending until at least June 2026 following reappointment; he previously served on the board from 2010. He has additionally served as a Director of the New Zealand Qualifications Authority. Professor Quigley has contributed to the development of tertiary education relationships between New Zealand and Vietnam. In recognition of these efforts, he received the Award of Merit for the Cause of Vietnam's Education from the Government of Vietnam in 2024. His career encompasses senior management positions in academic institutions alongside extensive involvement in public sector governance and economic policy advisory capacities.
