About Neil

Neil Reid is a Reader in Conservation Biology in the School of Biological Sciences at The Queen's University Belfast, where he is also affiliated with the Institute for Global Food Security. His research focuses on policy-relevant evaluation of conservation strategies, conservation ecology of priority species, applied ecology of farmland species, ecology of invasive species, statistical advances in terrestrial mammal abundance estimation techniques, and the impact of hunting wild mammals with dogs. He contributes to work aligned with UN Sustainable Development Goal 15 on Life on Land.

Reid holds a BSc (Hons) and a PhD. He has held roles including Senior Lecturer in Conservation Biology and Research Centre Manager at Quercus. He serves as Academic Lead for LGBTQIA+ and Disability Inclusion at the university. He has received nominations for Queen's University Belfast Delivering Excellence Award and Team of the Year Award, as well as a School of Biological Sciences Recognition Award. Reid is open to PhD supervision in conservation biology, ecology, zoology, or environmental science, with interests in agri-environment schemes, tropical conservation ecology, non-native biological invasions, and biodiversity monitoring methods including artificial intelligence applications.
