About Newman

Newman Sze is Professor of Health Sciences at Brock University and holds the position of Tier 1 Canada Research Chair in Mechanisms of Health and Disease. He joined the faculty at Brock University in 2021. Professor Sze graduated from the University of Hong Kong with a bachelor’s degree in chemistry and a doctoral degree in chemical physics.

His research focuses on uncovering the molecular mechanisms of aging, with particular emphasis on degenerative protein modifications and their roles in chronic diseases including cardiovascular disease, neurodegeneration, and cancer. Professor Sze develops advanced omics methods, DPM-specific monoclonal antibodies, and immunotherapeutic approaches to study and target these modifications. His work also incorporates systems biology, epidemiological analysis of large cohorts such as the UK Biobank and Canadian Longitudinal Study on Aging, and investigations into potential preventive strategies and therapies for age-related conditions. Professor Sze maintains professional affiliations with organizations including the Canadian Association on Gerontology, the American Heart Association, the International Society of Vascular Behavioural and Cognitive Disorders, the American Society for Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, the American Society for Mass Spectrometry, and the American Chemical Society. He contributes to teaching in areas such as the development of therapeutic antibodies and the progression from target discovery to diagnostics and therapy of disease. Recent publications from his research group address topics including isoDGR-modified proteins, dementia risk scores, atherosclerosis, and immunotherapeutic targeting of aging-associated motifs.
