About Nic

Professor Nic Beech is Vice-Chancellor of the University of Salford. He previously served as Vice-Chancellor of Middlesex University, Provost of the University of Dundee, Vice-Principal at the University of St Andrews, and held various roles at Strathclyde University including Director of Research and Head of School, becoming a professor in 2004. His academic field is business and management, with research focused on identity, diversity, change leadership and learning. He has championed equality, equity, diversity and inclusion through practice and applied research, including the first study of race in leadership in the FTSE 100 and work on inclusivity in education.

Nic Beech holds a PhD and has received numerous awards and fellowships, including the Richard Whipp Lifetime Achievement Award for Research, the Cooper Medal for Leadership of the Field, the BAM Medal for Leadership of EDI from the British Academy of Management in 2023, the Outstanding Service Award from the International Federation of Scholarly Associations of Management in 2022, and Distinguished Fellow from the Academy of Management of Australia and New Zealand in 2018. He is a Fellow of the Academy of Social Sciences, the British Academy of Management, the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development, the Royal Society of Arts, and a Companion of the Chartered Management Institute. He was the longest-serving president and chair of the British Academy of Management and has held leadership roles including Treasurer and Board member of Universities UK, Chair of the Quality Council for UK Higher Education, board member of the Quality Assurance Agency for Higher Education, and member of the Secretary of State’s Curriculum and Assessment Review panel for England. With over 100 publications, his books include Managing Creativity: Exploring the Paradox (2010), Organising Music: Theory, Practice and Performance (2015), Managing Change: Enquiry and Action (2nd edition, 2017), and Impact in Business and Management Research (2021). He has also authored or co-authored reports on topics such as equality, diversity and inclusion in UK business schools and the inclusion of international students in university governance.
