Professor Nic Smith serves as Vice-Chancellor of Victoria University of Wellington, a role he assumed in January 2023. Prior to this appointment, he held senior academic leadership positions including Provost at Queensland University of Technology, Dean of Engineering at the University of Auckland, Head of Biomedical Engineering at King’s College London, and Professor of Computational Physiology at the University of Oxford. In each of these roles, Professor Smith maintained an active commitment to teaching and research. His research has centered on the development of computational models integrated with patient images and applied in clinical settings to enhance the diagnosis and treatment of heart disease. He has authored more than 170 peer-reviewed journal publications and 350 conference publications. He is also the lead author on several patent applications concerning physiological models for specific clinical applications. Professor Smith is a Fellow of the Royal Society Te Apārangi and Engineering New Zealand. Throughout his career, he has contributed to public discussions on issues including the role of universities within their communities and the evolution of the student experience to address contemporary needs. As a New Zealand academic leader, he has focused on advancing the ambitions of Victoria University of Wellington as a globally engaged civic university.
