About Nicholas

Professor Nicholas Farrelly is Pro Vice-Chancellor for Southern Tasmania and Pro Vice-Chancellor for Arts and Society at the University of Tasmania. He joined the University of Tasmania in 2020 as Professor and Head of Social Sciences, a role he held until 2023. Prior to this, he held senior positions at the Australian National University, including Associate Dean in the College of Asia and the Pacific until 2019, where he managed international partnerships, government affairs, and corporate engagement. He also served as founding Director of the ANU Myanmar Research Centre.

Professor Farrelly graduated from the Australian National University with First Class Honours and the University Medal in Asian Studies. He completed his M.Phil and D.Phil at Balliol College, University of Oxford, as a Rhodes Scholar. His research focuses on the political, social, and economic development of Southeast Asia, with particular emphasis on Myanmar and Thailand. He has conducted extensive field research across the region and contributes regularly to academic and public discussions on Asian affairs. He previously co-founded New Mandala, a prominent online platform for Southeast Asian studies.
