About Nicholas

Professor Nicholas Timpson is Professor of Genetic Epidemiology at Bristol Medical School (Population Health Sciences) at the University of Bristol. He holds a BA and an MSc from the University of Oxford, a PhD from the University of Bristol, and a PGCHE. He is a Fellow of the Academy of Medical Sciences (FMedSci).

His research applies genetic epidemiology to examine potentially causal relationships between modifiable risk factors and complex health outcomes, making best use of population-based resources to understand health and wellbeing. Professor Timpson serves as Principal Investigator of the Avon Longitudinal Study of Parents and Children (ALSPAC) and as Co-Director and Principal Investigator of UKRI Population Research UK. In 2025 he was elected a Fellow of the Academy of Medical Sciences. He maintains an extensive programme of research with numerous peer-reviewed publications in the field of genetic epidemiology.
