Associate Professor Nicky Stanley-Clarke is a registered social worker and academic at Massey University’s School of Social Work. She holds a Bachelor of Social Work (Honours) awarded in 1997, a Master of Social Work awarded in 2001, and a Doctor of Philosophy awarded in 2013, all from Massey University. Her professional experience includes work in child protection, youth justice, public health, project management, and mental health settings. She teaches clinical social work, social policy, management, and leadership, and has served as a doctoral supervisor. Since 2019 she has been a member of Massey University’s Human Ethics committee (OM3) and is a full member of the Social Workers Registration Board.
Stanley-Clarke’s research focuses on rural wellbeing, including farmer mental health, mental health service delivery and organisations, social work and social policy, qualitative methodologies, and higher education. She has contributed to initiatives such as the WellMates and SafeMates peer-led mental health programmes for agricultural students and has led or co-led projects examining the mental health of rural women and agricultural students. In 2023 she received the ANZASW John Fry Memorial Supreme Award and the ANZASW Social Work Research or Education Award. Additional honours include the Women’s Suffrage 2020 Rock Award from the Tertiary Education Union and multiple Massey University research grants and fellowships. Her recent publications address topics including the role of rural mothers in supporting agricultural students, social worker wellbeing, and the impact of farmer identity on mental health help-seeking behaviours.
