Professor Nicola Mutch holds a Personal Chair at the University of Aberdeen, where she serves as Cardiometabolic Disease Theme Lead in the School of Medicine, Medical Sciences and Nutrition. She earned a BSc (Hons) in Molecular Biology from the University of Aberdeen in 1997 and a PhD in Thrombosis and Vascular Biology from the same institution in 2001. Her career at the University of Aberdeen includes appointments as Lecturer in 2010, Senior Research Fellow in 2011, Senior Lecturer in 2016, Reader in 2017, and Personal Chair in 2021. Prior to these roles, she was an Independent Research Fellow in cardiovascular medicine at the University of Leeds from 2007 to 2010 and a Postdoctoral Research Associate at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign from 2004 to 2006. She previously held British Heart Foundation Fellowships at the University of Aberdeen.
Professor Mutch's research focuses on haemostasis, thrombosis, and fibrinolysis, with contributions to understanding fibrinolytic mechanisms and their roles in cardiovascular and inflammatory conditions. She has received the ISTH Esteemed Career Award in 2024 and the Desiree Collen Young Investigator Award in 2012. Her professional service includes serving as Council Member of the International Society on Thrombosis and Haemostasis from 2024 to 2030, Vice-Chair of its Education Committee from 2024 to 2026, and Past President of the British Society for Haemostasis and Thrombosis from 2021 to 2024. She coordinates the course BM5003 Cardiovascular Health and Disease and supervises multiple PhD students. Recent publications include studies on plasminogen incorporation, postpartum hemorrhage detection, and fibrinolytic markers in proinflammatory environments, appearing in journals such as Blood Advances and Research and Practice in Thrombosis and Haemostasis.
