About Nidhi

Nidhi Bhutani is Associate Professor of Orthopaedic Surgery at Stanford University. She is a member of Bio-X, the Wu Tsai Human Performance Alliance, and the Maternal and Child Health Research Institute (MCHRI). Her research focuses on understanding fundamental mechanisms that govern and reprogram cellular fate during development, regeneration, and disease, with particular emphasis on reprogramming approaches for musculoskeletal regeneration, especially cartilage regeneration. Additional interests include mechanisms underlying stem cell self-renewal, differentiation, and cancer, as well as epigenetic regulation in development and disease, including the role of DNA demethylation pathways in cartilage development, regeneration, and osteoarthritis.

Bhutani leads the Bhutani Lab in the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery. She has authored or co-authored publications including the 2025 Science paper on inhibition of 15-hydroxy prostaglandin dehydrogenase to promote cartilage regeneration, a 2025 Arthritis & Rheumatology paper on immune cell profiling in osteoarthritis, a 2023 Nature Reviews Rheumatology article on single-cell profiling of joint tissues, and a 2020 Science Translational Medicine paper on TET1 inhibition in osteoarthritis. She previously received a 2014 AFAR Arthritis and Aging Research Grant. Bhutani teaches courses such as Orthopaedic Tissue Engineering and serves as an advisor in graduate and fellowship programs including Cancer Biology.
