About Nilofer

Prof. Nilofer Khan serves as the Vice-Chancellor of the University of Kashmir, having assumed the position on 20 May 2022 as the first woman to hold the role. She was re-appointed to a second term in 2025. Previously a professor in the Department of Home Science since 1985, she holds a PhD in Home Science with specialization in Extension and Communication. Her academic career at the university includes serving as Director of the Institute of Home Sciences, Dean of the Faculty of Applied Science and Technology, Dean of the College Development Council, Registrar (the first woman in that position), and Dean of Student Welfare (also the first woman). She has been a member of key university bodies including the Academic Council, Finance Committee, and University Syndicate, and chaired the Students’ Grievance Committee.

Khan supervised more than twenty doctoral scholars and nine MPhil researchers. In 2003, she visited several universities in the United States to study their academic and examination systems. Her publications include the books Growth & Development of Kashmiri Urban Children, Role of Kashmiri Women in Agriculture Development & Allied Fields (co-authored), and She: Impact of Domestic Violence on Kashmiri Women (co-authored). She also served as co-presiding officer of the Internal Compliance Committee of the Central University of Kashmir and as founder director of the Centre for Women’s Studies and Research at the University of Kashmir.
