About Nishan

Professor Nishan Canagarajah is President and Vice-Chancellor of the University of Leicester, a position he has held since 4 November 2019. Born and educated in Sri Lanka, he moved to the UK and earned a BA (Hons) degree in 1989 and a PhD in 1993, both from the University of Cambridge. He joined the University of Bristol as a research assistant in 1993 and progressed through a series of academic and leadership roles there, including Faculty of Engineering Research Director, Head of the Department of Computer Science, Head of the Merchant Venturers School of Engineering, and Dean of the Faculty of Engineering. In August 2014 he was appointed Pro Vice-Chancellor for Research and Enterprise at Bristol.

Professor Canagarajah is internationally recognised for his research on signal processing and texture classification. He was knighted in the 2026 King’s New Year Honours. In his current role at the University of Leicester he works with colleagues to build on the institution’s reputation in research and teaching.
