About Nomalanga

Dr Nomalanga Mashinini is a Senior Lecturer in Cyber Law at the School of Law, University of the Witwatersrand, where she was appointed in August 2022. She holds an LLB, an LLM, and an LLD from the University of Pretoria, with her doctoral thesis titled “The Recognition of Image Rights in the Context of Memes Shared on Social Media.” She also holds a Postgraduate Diploma in Higher Education with distinction from Rhodes University. Her research and teaching focus on image rights, social media law, artificial intelligence law, information and communications technology law, and selected aspects of data protection, including deepfakes, platform governance, and AI regulation. She is the founder and project lead of the Wits Image Rights Engagement (WiRE).

Dr Mashinini is a recipient of the Wits Carnegie Diversifying the Academy programme and chaired the first African Cyber Law Conference. She contributes to public discourse on topics such as deepfakes and AI policy through articles in The Conversation.
