Professor Nonhlanhla Khumalo is a professor in the Division of Dermatology, Department of Medicine, at the University of Cape Town. She graduated with a Bachelor of Medicine and Surgery (MBChB) in 1990. She completed specialist training in dermatology at Groote Schuur Hospital and spent three years at the Churchill Hospital in Oxford, United Kingdom, registering as a Fellow of the College of Dermatologists of South Africa (FCDerm(SA)) in 2003. She was awarded a PhD in Public Health from the University of Cape Town in 2007 and received the inaugural Discovery Foundation (SA) Research Fellowship Award. Professor Khumalo was appointed as a consultant dermatologist in 2008, received ad hominem promotion to Associate Professor in 2009 and to full Professor in 2016. She has served as Head of the Division of Dermatology at the University of Cape Town since December 2012 and was awarded the National Research Foundation SARChI chair in Dermatology and Toxicology in 2015. She is also Director of the Hair and Skin Research Lab.
Her career includes work as a general practitioner in Langa Township following her initial medical qualification. Professor Khumalo heads the Division of Dermatology at Groote Schuur Hospital and the University of Cape Town, where her roles encompass clinical practice, research leadership, and academic appointments within the Faculty of Health Sciences.
