Dr. Nosipho Carol Mavuso completed her Doctor of Philosophy at Nelson Mandela University in the Faculty of Engineering, the Built Environment and Technology. She graduated during the university’s Summer Graduation ceremony in December 2025. Her doctoral research, conducted while lecturing in Information Technology at Walter Sisulu University, developed a user-centred, AI-driven career guidance framework designed specifically for under-resourced universities in South Africa. The thesis, supervised by Distinguished Professor Darelle van Greunen of Nelson Mandela University and co-supervised by Professor Norbert Jere of the University of Fort Hare, identified significant barriers faced by students, including limited prior career guidance and static existing AI tools. It proposed a six-component framework that centres student backgrounds, institutional teaching capacity, AI-driven policies, curriculum design and stakeholder engagement.
Dr. Mavuso’s research interests include artificial intelligence, big data analytics, business intelligence, education recommender systems, knowledge creation through technology and ICTs for community development. She has presented and published work on infusing artificial intelligence into career choice and on designing adaptive career recommender interfaces, with papers appearing in 2023 and 2025. Her framework has practical applications for institutional policy, curriculum development and scalable digital career guidance tools. Dr. Mavuso continues to explore opportunities to develop a working prototype of the framework.
