About Núbia

Núbia Carelli Pereira de Avelar is an Associate Professor in the Department of Physiotherapy at Universidade Federal de Santa Catarina, Campus Araranguá. She serves as Coordinator of the Laboratório de Envelhecimento, Recursos e Reumatologia (LERER). She earned her undergraduate degree in Physiotherapy from Universidade Federal dos Vales do Jequitinhonha e Mucuri (UFVJM) between 2004 and 2008. She completed a master’s degree in Physiological Sciences through the Multicenter Graduate Program in Physiological Sciences at UFVJM from 2009 to 2010 and a doctorate in the same program from 2010 to 2013. She holds a specialization in Gerontology from the Sociedade Brasileira de Geriatria e Gerontologia (SBGG) and the Associação Brasileira de Fisioterapia em Gerontologia (ABRAFIGE).

Her professional experience centers on physiotherapy with emphasis in exercise physiology, therapeutic resources, and assessment and intervention for older adults’ health. She participates in research involving the Brazilian Longitudinal Study of Aging (ELSI-Brazil) and contributes to scientific review for national and international journals. She is a member of the Rehabilitation Committee of the Fragility Fracture Network (FFN Brasil), a full member of the Conselho Estadual do Idoso de Santa Catarina representing SBGG-SC since 2023, and a member of the Public Policies Commission of the same council. She served as Deputy Secretary of the Board of SBGG-SC from 2023 to 2025 and as President of the Department of Gerontology from 2025 to 2027. Her work focuses on topics including sarcopenia, multimorbidity, functional disability, fear of falling, and vitamin D in community-dwelling older adults.
