Numan Saeed is a Research Scientist at Mohamed bin Zayed University of Artificial Intelligence (MBZUAI). He joined the university in 2021 as a graduate research assistant and became its first Ph.D. graduate in 2024. His doctoral research, conducted within the BioMedIA group, focused on deep learning models for analyzing complex medical imaging data, with a central emphasis on head and neck cancers. Saeed earned his Ph.D. in Machine Learning from MBZUAI, with advisors including Professor Mohammad Yaqub. Prior to his doctorate, he completed an M.Sc. in Microsystems at Masdar Institute of Science and Technology in collaboration with MIT and a B.Sc. in Electrical Engineering from the National University of Computer and Emerging Sciences, where he received multiple academic honors including gold, silver, and bronze medals.
Since graduating, Saeed has continued at MBZUAI as a Research Scientist, leading projects on fetal ultrasound funded by GE HealthCare, developing vision-language models for fetal cardiac abnormalities, and advancing a large-scale echocardiography foundation model using millions of videos and reports. His work includes tumor segmentation, cancer prognosis through multimodal data integration, and the development of a Cancer Foundation Model supported by a Department of Health grant, focusing on breast, colorectal, and head and neck cancers using local UAE hospital data with radiologist involvement. He has organized the HECKTOR challenge at MICCAI and maintains collaborations with hospitals such as Sheikh Shakhbout Medical City, Cleveland Clinic Abu Dhabi, and Burjeel. Earlier experience includes a visiting researcher role at Technical University of Munich, industry positions at LabibAI and Etihad Airways, and research at Masdar Institute. Saeed has received awards including the MICCAI Young Scientist Grant in 2024 and first place in the HECKTOR 2021 challenge. He has mentored master’s and Ph.D. students and served as a teaching assistant for courses in medical imaging, deep learning, and machine learning at MBZUAI.
