About Onder

Dr. Onder Albayram is an Associate Professor in the Department of Medicine, Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine, and Department of Neuroscience at the Medical University of South Carolina. His research training began as an undergraduate research fellow at the Medical Research Council Laboratory of Molecular Biology at the University of Cambridge. He earned his M.S. in Pharmaceutical Sciences, with a focus on neuropharmacology, from the University of Southern California in Los Angeles, and completed his Ph.D. in Neurobiology at the Institute of Molecular Psychiatry at the University of Bonn in Germany. He subsequently pursued faculty level training in translational neuroscience at Harvard Medical School.

Dr. Albayram’s research program investigates neuroimmune and cerebrovascular integration in brain resilience, aging, and neurodegeneration, as well as brain border biology, lymphatic clearance, and neuroimmune resilience in aging and neurodegeneration. His work has included the first non-invasive MR imaging of the ventral and dorsal lymphatic networks in the human brain, published in Nature Communications in 2022, and studies on cis P-tau in brain injury published in Nature Communications in 2017 and Nature in 2015. Additional publications include work on eicosapentaenoic acid and cerebrovascular metabolism in Cell Reports in 2026, meningeal lymphatic architecture in iScience in 2025, and p17/C18-ceramide-mediated mitophagy in PNAS Nexus in 2024. He is a member of the National Trauma Society Committee.
