About Pascal

Prof. Dr. Pascal Friederich is a professor at the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT). He earned his bachelor's, master's, and Ph.D. degrees in physics from KIT, with his doctorate awarded summa cum laude. He serves as chair of the AI for Materials Sciences (AiMat) research unit and is affiliated with the Institute of Anthropomatics and Robotics as well as the Institute of Theoretical Informatics, with a co-appointment at the Institute of Nanotechnology. His academic career at KIT includes roles as a Ph.D. student, postdoc, assistant professor starting in 2019, and full professor from 2025 onward. Friederich leads research focused on artificial intelligence and machine learning applications in materials science, including virtual materials design, graph neural networks, and machine learning potentials.

He received the Heinz Maier-Leibnitz Prize from the German Research Foundation in 2022 for his contributions to virtual material design using artificial intelligence. Additional recognition includes the Otto Haxel Award for his dissertation. Friederich's work centers on developing AI methods to advance materials discovery and design, supporting interdisciplinary research in computer science and materials-related fields at KIT.
