About Paulo

Paulo Artaxo is a full professor in the Department of Applied Physics at the Institute of Physics of the Universidade de São Paulo. He graduated in Physics from the Universidade de São Paulo in 1977, obtained a master’s degree in Nuclear Physics from the same institution in 1980, and earned a PhD in Atmospheric Physics from the Universidade de São Paulo. His research focuses on the physics and chemistry of atmospheric aerosols, their role in the Earth radiation budget, interactions between the Amazon forest and the atmosphere, global climate change, and urban air pollution. Artaxo has led or participated in major international field campaigns, including the Large-Scale Biosphere-Atmosphere Experiment in Amazonia (LBA). He has served as a lead author for the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) Assessment Reports AR4, AR5, and AR6.

Artaxo has authored or co-authored more than 500 scientific publications, including numerous papers in high-impact journals. He is a member of the Brazilian Academy of Sciences and has received several honors, including the TWAS Prize in Earth Sciences in 2007, the Ordem do Mérito Científico Nacional at the Comendador level in 2010, the Almirante Álvaro Alberto Award in 2016, and the Alliance of World Scientists Planet Earth Award in 2026. He has advised numerous master’s and doctoral students and contributed to scientific steering committees of international programs.
