Peter Hendricks is a Professor in the Department of Health Behavior at the University of Alabama at Birmingham School of Public Health and holds a concurrent appointment as Professor in the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Neurobiology at the Heersink School of Medicine. He serves as Director of Research and was appointed Director of Psychedelic Studies in the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Neurobiology. Hendricks earned a Doctor of Philosophy in Psychology from the University of South Florida and completed a postdoctoral fellowship on drug abuse treatment and services research at the University of California, San Francisco before joining UAB in 2010. He is the Heersink Endowed Chair in Psychiatry.
Hendricks conducts research on substance abuse treatment and prevention, with a focus on hallucinogenic therapy and novel treatments for tobacco, cocaine, and polysubstance dependence. He is investigating the use of psilocybin to assist individuals in overcoming cocaine addiction and has studied psychedelics extensively, including applications in smoking cessation. In 2023, he was named Co-Editor-in-Chief of the peer-reviewed journal Psychedelic Medicine, the first journal dedicated to publishing original research on all aspects of psychedelic medicine including basic science, clinical, and translational studies. His work contributes to advancing understanding of addiction and potential therapeutic uses of psychedelics within academic and clinical settings.
