About Peter

Professor Peter Høj is an Emeritus Professor at Adelaide University in the College of Science, School of Agriculture, Food and Wine. He holds a Bachelor of Science from the University of Copenhagen, majoring in biochemistry and chemistry, a Master of Science in biochemistry and genetics from the Carlsberg Laboratory, and a Doctor of Philosophy in photosynthesis from the Royal Veterinary and Agricultural University. His early research career included a postdoctoral fellowship at La Trobe University, followed by appointment as Professor of Viticulture at the University of Adelaide from 1994 to 2004. He served as Managing Director of the Australian Wine Research Institute from 1997 and as Chief Executive Officer of the Australian Research Council from 2004 to 2007.

Professor Høj has held senior leadership positions across multiple Australian universities, including Vice-Chancellor and President of the University of South Australia from 2007 to 2012, the University of Queensland from 2012 to 2020, and the University of Adelaide from 2021 to 2026. He also served as founding co-Vice-Chancellor of Adelaide University from 2024 to 2026. His honours include Companion of the Order of Australia (AC), Fellowship of the Australian Academy of Science (FAA), Fellowship of the Australian Academy of Technological Sciences and Engineering (FTSE), and Fellowship of the National Academy of Inventors (US) (FNAI). He received the Boehringer-Mannheim Medal in 1992 for outstanding contributions as a biochemist and molecular biologist under the age of 40. Professor Høj has published numerous scientific articles on topics including photosynthesis, plant biochemistry, and viticulture. He has served on boards including those of CSIRO, Wine Australia, and the Australian Cancer Research Foundation, and was elected chair of the Group of Eight in 2017.
