Professor Petra Hamerlik is Professor of Neuro-oncology in the Division of Cancer Sciences at the University of Manchester and holds the position of The Brain Tumour Charity Chair of Translational Neuro-Oncology. She joined the university in September 2022, where she leads a translational neuro-oncology programme focused on brain tumour biology, early detection through liquid biopsies, preclinical patient-derived models, and brain metastases. Her appointment followed prior roles as Group Leader of the Brain Tumour Biology laboratory at the Danish Cancer Research Centre with an affiliation as associate professor at the University of Copenhagen, and as Director and Bioscience Lead in Oncology R&D at AstraZeneca.
Professor Hamerlik completed her PhD in the Czech Republic before establishing her independent research group in Denmark over 13 years. At Manchester she collaborates with clinical teams at The Christie and Salford Royal NHS Foundation Trusts to translate laboratory findings into clinical applications, including national multi-centre studies on biomarkers and the development of patient-derived xenograft models for drug testing. Her work aims to improve outcomes for patients with glioblastoma and other central nervous system tumours through international collaborations and integration of academic and industry expertise.
