About Pierre

Professor Pierre Venter is the Vice-Chancellor of Massey University, having taken up the role in February 2026. Originally from South Africa, he completed a Bachelor of Science in Biology, a Bachelor of Science (Honours) in Microbiology, and a Doctor of Philosophy in Microbiology at the University of the Free State in Bloemfontein. He subsequently spent seven years at the Central University of Technology, Free State, where he advanced to the position of Professor, serving as a research leader and doctoral supervisor.

Professor Venter relocated to Palmerston North, New Zealand, in 2011 to join Fonterra, where he most recently served as Director of Research and Development, leading a strategic portfolio. His team received multiple global product innovation awards. In 2024, he was awarded the Significant Contribution to Food Safety Award by the New Zealand Institute of Food Science and Technology. He is a member of the New Zealand Institute of Directors. Professor Venter’s career has focused on connecting people and ideas to generate practical value through science, education, and partnerships.
