Pinchuan Ong is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Strategy and Policy at the NUS Business School, National University of Singapore, a position he has held since 2020. He earned a Ph.D. in Economics from Northwestern University in 2020, with a dissertation titled Essays in Labor and Applied Microeconomics; his committee was chaired by Matthew Notowidigdo and included Seema Jayachandran and Diane Whitmore Schanzenbach. He also holds a B. Soc. Sci. (First Class Honors) in Economics and a B. Eng. (First Class Honors) in Chemical Engineering, both from the National University of Singapore, awarded in 2012. Prior to his academic appointment, Ong served as an Economist at the Ministry of Trade and Industry, Government of Singapore, from 2012 to 2014.
Ong’s research focuses on labor economics, public economics, and applied microeconomics. His publications include the 2024 article “The Mortality Effects of Winter Heating Prices,” co-authored with Janjala Chirakijja and Seema Jayachandran and published in The Economic Journal. He has received a Dissertation Year Fellowship from Northwestern University in 2019 and Dean’s List recognitions from NUS in 2009 and 2010. Ong has secured multiple NUS research grants, including a Start-up Grant of SGD $90,000 (2020–2023) and Tier 1 Grants totaling over SGD $220,000 (2022–2025). He teaches courses such as BSP1703 and BSP1707 Managerial Economics at NUS and has supervised MBA consulting projects.
