Qi Sun is an Associate Professor in the Departments of Nutrition and Epidemiology at the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health and an Associate Professor of Medicine at Harvard Medical School, affiliated with Brigham and Women’s Hospital. He also serves as Director of the Nutritional Biomarker Laboratory. Dr. Sun earned his MD in Maternal and Child Health from Beijing Medical University, an MMS in Social Medicine and Health Service Management from Beijing University Health Science Center, and an ScD in Nutrition and Epidemiology from Harvard School of Public Health. His research integrates omics technologies with nutritional epidemiological approaches to identify novel biomarkers of diet and environmental exposures linked to excess weight gain, type 2 diabetes, and cardiovascular disease. Key discoveries include endogenous metabolites such as very-long chain saturated fatty acids, endocrine disruptors like bisphenol A and per- or polyfluoroalkyl substances, circulating proteins including fatty acid binding protein 4 and soluble leptin receptor, and the role of the gut microbiome in metabolic diseases. As an established nutritional epidemiologist, he has led projects examining associations between dietary factors and cardiometabolic conditions, contributing to the understanding of biological mechanisms underlying nutrition and metabolic health and informing U.S. dietary guidelines for chronic disease prevention. Dr. Sun received the Mark Bieber Award from the American Heart Association in 2013, the Trudy Bush Fellowship for Cardiovascular Research in Women’s Health in 2008, and graduated cum laude from Peking University in 2002.
His work has advanced knowledge in public health through extensive publications and leadership in biomarker research.
