Prof. R. Velraj is a Professor in the Department of Mechanical Engineering at Anna University, Chennai, where he has served since 1992. He holds a Ph.D. awarded by Anna University in 1999, with a portion of his doctoral research conducted at the Solar Institute in Juelich, Germany. From 2021 to 2024, he served as Vice Chancellor of Anna University. He previously directed the Institute for Energy Studies at the university.
His research focuses on thermal energy storage, phase change materials, nanofluids, solar energy applications, building cooling, and energy-efficient systems. He has supervised 37 Ph.D. scholars and contributed to the supervision of 15 additional scholars. According to Google Scholar, his work has received more than 16,500 citations with an h-index of 67. He has led 12 sponsored research projects funded by agencies including DST, MNRE, DRDO, and others, and completed 32 consultancy projects. Notable recognitions include the Research Excellence Award and the Distinguished Researcher Award, both conferred in 2019 by Anna University. He has authored or co-authored numerous publications in indexed journals and conference proceedings.
