About Rachael

Professor Rachael Niederer is an Associate Professor in the Department of Ophthalmology within the Faculty of Medical and Health Sciences at the University of Auckland. She holds a PhD from the University of Auckland, awarded in 2008, along with an MBChB and FRANZCO qualifications. Niederer began her PhD studies at the University of Auckland in 2005 and received the Vice Chancellor's Best Doctoral Thesis Award for her work. She completed a fellowship at Moorfields Eye Hospital in London, specialising in uveitis and medical retina. In 2019, she was appointed Senior Lecturer in the Department of Ophthalmology at the University of Auckland and was promoted to Associate Professor in late 2025.

Niederer's research specialisations include uveitis, the epidemiology of visual impairment, and diabetic retinopathy. She has authored or co-authored over 120 peer-reviewed publications and maintains active clinical and teaching roles. Her contributions extend to supervision of postgraduate students and involvement in eye health research initiatives in New Zealand. Niederer is recognised for her expertise in ocular inflammatory diseases and retinal conditions through her academic appointments and clinical practice at Auckland District Health Board facilities.
