Ralf Youtz is a math instructor in the Sylvania Math Department at Portland Community College. He earned an Associate of Arts Transfer Degree from PCC in 2005 and joined the PCC faculty as a math instructor in 2014. Youtz teaches mathematics and statistics courses and is committed to using Open Educational Resources to reduce costs for students. He served as project lead on an Open Oregon Educational Resources grant to adopt an open textbook for face-to-face statistics courses, including MTH 243 and MTH 244. He is a co-author of the open-source textbook Open Resources for Community College Algebra. The faculty group including Youtz received the Oregon Open Educational Resources Champion Award and the 2018 Online Learning Consortium Digital Learning Innovation Award for their OER work.
Youtz has facilitated workshops on effective teaching practices and educational equity for PCC math instructors and at the Oregon Mathematical Association of Two Year Colleges Conference. He has participated in professional development opportunities focused on teaching men of color in the community college and shares ideas about reducing achievement gaps in mathematics education. Youtz contributes to supplemental materials and web versions of statistics resources through OpenIntro.
