Dr Randa Abdel-Fattah is an ARC Future Fellow in the Department of Sociology at Macquarie University. She holds a Doctor of Philosophy in Sociology from Macquarie University, awarded in 2016, as well as a Bachelor of Arts and a Bachelor of Laws (Honours) from the University of Melbourne, both awarded in 2002. Prior to her academic career, she practised as a litigation lawyer and is admitted as a lawyer of the NSW Supreme Court.
Her research focuses on Islamophobia, race, Palestine, the war on terror, youth identities and social movement activism. Her current ARC Future Fellowship project examines Arab and Muslim Australian social movements since the 1970s. She previously led a DECRA project on trust, politics and fear among Generation 9/11 Muslim and non-Muslim youth. Abdel-Fattah is the author of twelve books, including the academic monographs Islamophobia and Everyday Multiculturalism (Routledge, 2018) and Coming of Age in the War on Terror (NewSouth Publishing, 2021). She has received multiple literary awards, including the Victorian Premier’s Literary Award for Best Young Adult Fiction and the Victorian Premier’s Literary Award People’s Choice Award. She is also a patron of the Racial Justice Centre.
