Dr. Randy M. Brooks is the former Dean of the College of Arts & Sciences and Professor of English at Millikin University. He earned his Ph.D. in rhetoric and technical writing from Purdue University. At Millikin, he served as Chair of the English Department from 2003 to 2008, Acting Dean from 2008 to 2010, Dean of Teaching and Learning from 2006 to 2008, and Dean of the College of Arts & Sciences. He received the Faculty Teaching Excellence and Campus Leadership award in 2007 and was named the James Millikin Scholars Outstanding Educator of the Year in 2013. He also received the Community Solutions for Education National Award sponsored by the Coalition on Educational Initiatives and USA Today. Dr. Brooks has developed and taught courses on writing, rhetoric, poetry, teaching writing, and publishing, with a focus on integrating performance learning, community service, technology, and publishing. He collaborated to establish a book-publishing curriculum that includes the co-taught Art of Publishing course and the student-run Bronze Man Books company.
Dr. Brooks has four decades of experience in literary editing and has published over 70 books and four literary serial publications. He and his wife, Shirley Brooks, are co-editors and publishers of Brooks Books and editors of Mayfly, a biannual haiku magazine. He serves as web editor for Modern Haiku magazine and as Electronic Media Officer for the Haiku Society of America. He has received international recognition for his writing, editing, and publishing of haiku poetry, with hundreds of his poems published in journals and anthologies, including the selected haiku collection School’s Out. Dr. Brooks is currently Adjunct Faculty in Writing, Languages & Cultures at Millikin University.
