About Rangan

Prof. Rangan Banerjee is currently the Director of the Indian Institute of Technology Delhi. He has been on lien from the Indian Institute of Technology Bombay since February 2022, where he served as the Forbes Marshall Chair Professor in the Department of Energy Science and Engineering, a department he helped establish in 2007. His academic background includes a B.Tech in Mechanical Engineering and a PhD in Mechanical Engineering, both from the Indian Institute of Technology Bombay.

Prof. Banerjee’s research interests encompass energy management and energy efficiency, demand side management, energy modelling, power systems planning, energy planning and policy, cogeneration, and fuel cells and hydrogen storage. He has held progressive academic appointments at IIT Bombay, including Visiting Assistant Professor starting in October 1993, Assistant Professor from July 1994, Associate Professor from June 1997, and Forbes Marshall Chair Professor from March 2003. Prior to joining IIT Bombay, he worked as Assistant Professor at the Indira Gandhi Institute of Development Research, Senior Engineer at Engineers India Ltd., Research Associate at the Tata Energy Research Institute, and in other research and industry roles. He previously served as Dean (R&D) at IIT Bombay and received the Excellence in Teaching Award from the institute. Prof. Banerjee is a Fellow of the Indian National Academy of Engineering and serves on the editorial boards of the International Journal of Sustainable Energy, International Journal of Sustainable Engineering, International Journal of Thermodynamics, Solar Energy Advances, and Global Transitions (Energy Transitions). He has authored numerous peer-reviewed publications on topics including solar hydrogen production, power sector emissions modeling, biomass-based power systems, and life cycle analyses of energy technologies.
