Reza Hasmath is a Full Professor of Political Science in the Faculty of Arts at the University of Alberta. He earned his Ph.D. from the University of Cambridge. He has previously held faculty positions in management, sociology, and political science at the Universities of Toronto, Melbourne, and Oxford. He has also worked for and advised global think tanks, consultancies, development agencies, and social organizations. He was formally trained in philosophy, public policy, international studies and diplomacy, social and political sciences, as well as various East Asian and European languages.
His award-winning research examines ethnic minorities and integration in comparative global contexts; state-society relationships, policy experimentation, NGO development, and citizenship construction in China; China’s global re-emergence and the internationalization of Chinese actors; and global sustainability and ESG governance. He is the Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Civil Society and the Foundation Editor of the Routledge Research on the Politics and Sociology of China book series. He serves as Executive Director of the Association for Research on Nonprofit Organizations and Voluntary Action (ARNOVA) and as Academic Faculty Advisor at the China Institute at the University of Alberta. He was the 2025 Canada-U.S. Fulbright Visiting Research Chair in Public Diplomacy at the University of Southern California and received the 2021 David Easton Award from the University of Alberta Department of Political Science.
