About Rhian

Professor Rhian Gabe is Professor of Biostatistics and Clinical Trials at the Wolfson Institute of Population Health, Queen Mary University of London. She holds a background in mathematics from the University of Liverpool and epidemiology from the University of Cambridge, and earned her PhD from Queen Mary University of London for work using statistical methods to evaluate breast cancer screening with mammography. Her career includes positions at the MRC Cancer Trials Office in Cambridge starting in 1996, the MRC Clinical Trials Unit in London, and the York Trials Unit, where she gained experience in designing, analysing and leading clinical trials.

At Queen Mary, Professor Gabe leads the Centre for Evaluation and Methods and directs the Barts Clinical Trials Unit. Her research focuses on clinical trials and the screening, prevention and early detection of cancer, with involvement in studies on prostate cancer detection, lung cancer screening via mobile low-dose CT, and other areas including infection and respiratory health. She has contributed to major trials such as the UKLS lung screening trial, the PROMIS study on prostate cancer diagnosis, and trials on smoking cessation in tuberculosis patients and treatments for various cancers. Key publications include work on lung cancer mortality reduction by LDCT screening (2021), diagnostic accuracy of multi-parametric MRI in prostate cancer (2017), and multiple randomised controlled trials on cancer treatments and screening interventions published in journals such as The Lancet and Journal of Clinical Oncology. She serves in leadership roles advancing clinical trials methodology and population health research.
