Ricardo J. Soares Magalhães is Professor of Zoonotic Disease Epidemiology and Biosecurity at the University of Queensland School of Veterinary Science and Director of the Queensland Alliance for One Health Sciences. He is a European Veterinary Board Specialist in Population Medicine. Professor Soares Magalhães holds a Master of Science in Control of Infectious Diseases in Animals from University College London and a Doctor of Philosophy from the University of Queensland. His research focuses on the spatial epidemiology of zoonotic and neglected tropical infections, outbreak response for emerging infectious diseases, and animal health and the environment or biosecurity. A key emphasis of his work involves developing geographical risk assessment methods to support prioritisation of climate-sensitive zoonotic infectious diseases for improved surveillance and risk management in human and animal populations.

Professor Soares Magalhães leads the development of epidemiological data analytics platforms addressing zoonotic influenza, antimicrobial resistance in agribusinesses and the environment, and veterinary clinical data. His team's research experience spans national and international contexts in spatial epidemiology of zoonotic infections, outbreak response for emerging zoonoses, and risk assessment of animal environmental health and biosecurity. He contributes to projects that inform policy on integrated surveillance protocols for zoonotic diseases and spatial risk assessment approaches.
