About Richard

Richard Clarke is Executive Dean of the Faculty of Engineering and Design at the University of Auckland. He joined the Department of Engineering Science at the University in April 2008. He was appointed Associate Dean of Postgraduate Research in 2018 and Deputy Dean of the Faculty of Engineering in 2021. In late 2023 he was appointed Dean of Engineering. Clarke began his career in management consulting before completing his MMath undergraduate degree (1996-2000) and PhD (2002-2005) in the School of Mathematical Sciences at the University of Nottingham in the United Kingdom. He subsequently held a David Crighton Fellowship in the Department of Applied Mathematics and Theoretical Physics at the University of Cambridge, where he studied the hydrodynamics of microbe suspensions, followed by a two-year Australian Research Council-funded postdoctoral position at the University of Adelaide.

Clarke’s research focuses on fluid dynamics, biomechanics and active matter, with particular interests in biologically active matter, endothelial glycocalyx, mathematical and computational modelling, and related areas such as viscous fingering in geothermal reservoirs and blood-flow simulation. His work has been published in journals including the Journal of Fluid Mechanics, Physical Review Letters, Proceedings of the Royal Society A, and Geothermics. He serves on the University of Auckland Executive Team and Senate.
