About Richard

Richard M. Locke served as the 13th Provost of Brown University from 2015 to 2022 and as Schreiber Family Professor of Political Science and International and Public Affairs. He joined the Brown faculty in 2013 as Professor of Political Science and Director of the Thomas J. Watson Institute for International and Public Affairs. Prior to Brown, Locke held positions at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, including chair of the Department of Political Science and deputy dean at the MIT Sloan School of Management.

Locke earned a Bachelor of Arts from Wesleyan University in 1981, a Master of Arts in education from the University of Chicago in 1990, and a Ph.D. in political science from MIT in 1989. His research focuses on labor standards in global supply chains and international labor relations. He is the author of books including Remaking the Italian Economy (1995), The Promise and Limits of Private Power: Promoting Labor Standards in a Global Economy (2013), and Production in the Innovation Economy (2014, co-edited). Locke received the inaugural Progress Medal for Scholarship and Leadership on Fairness and Well-being from the Society for Progress in 2016. He has served on advisory committees for organizations including the Better Work Program and chaired Apple’s Academic Advisory Board. Professional Email: null
