Dr Richard Schloeffel OAM is a Clinical Senior Lecturer in the Sydney Medical School at the Faculty of Medicine and Health, The University of Sydney. He holds an MBBS from the University of New South Wales, awarded in 1978, and is a Fellow of the Royal Australian College of General Practitioners. With over 46 years of experience as a general practitioner, he has treated thousands of patients with complex chronic conditions, including approximately 6,000 individuals with myalgic encephalomyelitis/chronic fatigue syndrome (ME/CFS). His clinical work has also focused on tick-borne and vector-borne diseases, with experience treating more than 1,200 patients in these areas. Dr Schloeffel previously served as principal at Pymble Grove Health Centre and has worked in rural general practice as well as in developing countries including Papua New Guinea, China, India, Bali, and Eastern Europe.
He is a co-author of the 2025 paper titled "Mapping the complexity of ME/CFS: Evidence for abnormal energy metabolism, altered immune profile, and vascular dysfunction," published in Cell Reports Medicine. Dr Schloeffel has received the Order of Australia Medal (OAM) and has contributed to clinical education and awareness efforts related to ME/CFS and emerging illnesses. He has participated in Senate inquiries on tick-borne diseases in Australia and previously held the role of Medical Director at Emerge Australia, from which he has since stepped down.
