About Richard

A/Prof Richard L Young is an NHMRC Externally-Funded Research Associate Professor in the School of Medicine at The University of Adelaide and a Senior Research Fellow at the South Australian Health and Medical Research Institute (SAHMRI), where he leads research groups focused on intestinal nutrient sensing and stress and metabolic biology. He holds a BSc and BSc Honours from the University of Adelaide and a PhD from the University of Melbourne. Appointed Associate Professor at The University of Adelaide in 2016, he also serves as Postgraduate and Honours Course Coordinator in the Adelaide Medical School and is a founding member of the Centre of Research Excellence in Translating Nutritional Science to Good Health.

His research centres on nutritional physiology, with a focus on intestinal sweet taste detection and its role in glucose regulation in health, obesity, type 2 diabetes and critical illness. He investigates nutrient-gut interactions, gut hormone systems, the corticosteroid-binding globulin delivery axis in sepsis and septic shock, and related areas including pregnancy adaptations in gastrointestinal function. His work has contributed to understanding mechanisms of glycemic control and potential therapies for inflammatory conditions, supported by substantial NHMRC funding and a portfolio exceeding $23 million historically. He has authored or co-authored numerous peer-reviewed publications on these topics.
