About Rie

Rie Okamura serves as Associate Professor at the Center for Gender, Diversity and Inclusion and in the Graduate School of Humanities and Social Sciences at Saitama University. Her research centers on sociology-related fields, including gender studies, women's leadership development, work-life balance, social capital, family relations, and diversity in higher education and organizational settings. She has held previous appointments at Ochanomizu University as Specially Appointed Lecturer in the Global Leadership Institute and as Researcher in the Institute for Global Leadership.

Okamura has led or contributed to multiple Grants-in-Aid for Scientific Research projects funded by the Japan Society for the Promotion of Science. These include investigations into the challenges and future prospects of diversity studies in Japan from an interdisciplinary perspective (2025–2030), fostering women's leadership through community organizing and narrative approaches (as co-investigator), the existence of a 'glass cliff' for women managers in unstable leadership positions (2023–2027), how female managers develop considering workplace environment, family relations, and leadership education (2020–2023), and maternal use of ICT in early childhood for child-rearing resources (2018–2020). Her publications include the co-authored book Life Plans and Self-Realization (2024, Yuhikaku), contributions to the book Aging Society and Family: Comparison of Policies and Practices between China and Japan (2021), and numerous journal articles such as those in University Education Society Journal (2024) on sociocultural influences on student leadership development and in Child Health (2024) on parenting and SNS from a sociological perspective. Additional works address gender differences in perceptions of leader qualities among university students across Asian countries and surveys on women in leadership positions at Japanese companies. Her work contributes to advancing understanding of gender dynamics, leadership education, and diversity initiatives in academic and professional contexts.
