About Rose

Scientia Professor Rose Amal is a chemical engineer at the University of New South Wales. She holds a Bachelor of Engineering with First Class Honours in Chemical Engineering from UNSW, awarded in 1988, and a PhD in Chemical Engineering from UNSW, awarded in 1991. She joined the School of Chemical Engineering at UNSW as a lecturer in 1992 and was promoted to Professor in 2004. Professor Amal has served as Director of the Particles and Catalysis Research Group since 1997. She has held leadership positions including Inaugural Director of the UNSW Energy Institute from 2008 to 2010 and Director of the ARC Centre of Excellence for Functional Nanomaterials from 2010 to 2013. She is currently Co-Director of the ARC Training Centre for the Global Hydrogen Economy and Deputy Director of the ARC Centre of Excellence for Carbon Science and Innovation.

Professor Amal is recognised as a pioneer in photocatalysis and functional nanomaterials. Her research focuses on designing catalysts for solar and chemical energy conversion applications, including water and air purification, water splitting for hydrogen production, CO2 reduction, and NOx reduction. She has attracted more than AUD 108 million in competitive research funding and has authored over 570 peer-reviewed journal articles. Professor Amal was awarded an ARC Australian Laureate Fellowship and appointed a Companion of the Order of Australia in 2018. She received the NSW Scientist of the Year Award in 2019, the James Cook Medal in 2021, and the IChemE Clean Energy Medal in 2022. She is a Fellow of the Australian Academy of Science, the Australian Academy of Technological Sciences and Engineering, and other professional bodies.
